Nothing could have prepared me for the mayhem that is a Kylie Cosmetics restock. I’ve been OBSESSED with trying to buy Kylie Jenner’s Lip Kit after seeing how lovely the colours look in people’s selfies and reading comments about how long-lasting the colour is. I’m definitely blaming Instagram for this…
Before you judge, let me say that I’m not going to turn into a Kardashian-loving blogger anytime soon. I don’t watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians. But I am a beauty junkie and if there’s a hot new product, you know I’m going to be tempted.
Kylie’s matte liquid lipsticks have taken the beauty world by storm since their launch in 2015. There are eight different shades, including dark brown, pale nude and orange red. Lip glosses and metallic liquid lip sticks also launched a few weeks ago.
Back to the restock. Ah yes, it’s almost as if it was yesterday. There I was, sitting (impatiently) waiting for the clock to strike midnight (UK time). Tick, tock, tick tock.. ugh… come on! Patience is really not one of my strong points and it felt like time was actually slowing down.
11.59pm. Oh my goodness. One minute to go. The Kylie Cosmetics website was open on my laptop. I nervously checked Twitter to see how the drama was unfolding.
“IT’S MIDNIGHT… GO, GO, GO!” People tweeted in a frenzy as soon as the lipsticks were online. I knew in advance which colours I wanted (Mary Jo K and Posie K) and paid for them within mere seconds of the restock. Phew, what a relief!
Within 15 minutes the entire matte collection had sold out. It was a strange experience. Girls (and women) posted distraught tweets if they’d been unable to buy anything and those who were victorious were just a little bit smug. Like me.
It was such a traumatic experience for one girl, she posted on Twitter: ‘I’m more upset about not getting a #KylieLipKit than I was when me & my ex broke up.’ Ouch.
I’m very happy with my purchases. First of all, can we talk about how amazing the packaging is?! It’s bold, stylish and in your face. You wouldn’t expect anything less from Kylie Jenner would you?
Mary Jo K is the perfect red. It has a blue undertone which really suits my pale complexion and it makes my teeth look so bright. I love it.
Posie K is a dusty mauve pink, which sounds like it shouldn’t work but it definitely does. I love wearing this colour.
Considering you get a liquid lipstick and a matching lipliner for $29 USD (£20), I think they’re very good value for money. Once you’ve mastered the art of lining your lips à la Miss Jenner, the lipstick is fairly simple to use.
I usually prefer to apply lipstick straight from the bullet but I like how defined my lips are with these lip kits. However, I think the formula dries a little too quickly because if you make a mistake, you can’t patch it up as you would with an ordinary lipstick. If you don’t apply the colour in one quick swoop of the wand, you’ll definitely notice.
They’re made with moisturising ingredients to give lips a silky texture but the smooth feeling doesn’t last as long as I’d like it to. I wish the formula was more moisturising.
Fans say their colour stays on for up to 10 hours. Mine roughly lasts for five hours. Perhaps I need to prep my lips first with a lip scrub…
There’s also room for improvement with the lipliner lid. Because there’s very little grip, the lid comes off easily, which isn’t good news if you’ve put it in your cosmetic bag.
Overall, I’m really impressed with the colours and I think I might be tempted to buy a few more in the future. If I can cope with the online battleground again, that is!
