Spring is fast approaching, which means it’s time to pack away the winter coats (I hope) and bring out the lighter, prettier clothes that have been hiding in the wardrobe for months.
If you’re thinking of updating your look for this season, start shopping for accessories. They’re a budget-friendly way of transforming your style – here’s a quick guide to the pieces you might want to consider.
This year’s best spring accessories
Fingerless gloves
It’s time to evoke a bit of vintage chic with some cute fingerless gloves! They’re ideal for spring as they won’t keep your hands too warm but they’ll help to fight off any chilly breezes and protect hands from the sun.
Stylish sunglasses
Although it’s not summer just yet, the sun will undoubtedly be out. Treat yourself to a new pair of sunglasses to instantly breathe new life into your look. The key trends are oversized, frameless or embellished. Kittenish cat’s-eye frames are also in (think saucy secretary), as are 70s-inspired aviator sunglasses.
A head-scarf
A head-scarf can be worn in several different ways. Roll it up thin and use it as an Alice band. Spread it out and cover your entire head. Tie it around your neck for a rakish, 40s-inspired vibe. It also works as a cravat (very chic as workwear) or even a bracelet if you wrap it around your wrist.
Brightly coloured eyeshadow
Nude, shimmery eyeshadow is still very now, but if you want to revamp your style, invest in a palette with a pop of colour. Forest green, burnt orange and acid yellow are all in at the moment; but if you’d prefer to keep it a bit more subtle, look for pastel shades, like lavender or baby-blue.
Earrings
A pair of statement earrings totally change the nature of an outfit, creating a bold focal point. The fashion houses seem to be looking back to the past at the moment, with colourful mod-style earrings. Choose a colourful pair, then keep the rest of your outfit beige or monochrome. It’ll get heads turning!
Dr Martens boots
This classic 90s staple has made a big comeback this year. They team up with virtually everything; from floaty maxi-dresses to rolled-up jeans. The best choice are the iconic black lace-ups or the red patent pair, if you’re feeling adventurous.
Fragrance
Make no mistake, scent is just as much an accessory as anything else. Indeed, it something people notice as soon as they meet you, so it’s important to use it to good effect. This season’s fragrances are fresh, fruity and often with a hint of the unexpected, like pink peppercorn or cinnamon. Copycat Fragrances is a good place to look for inspiration.
Socks
Yes, really! The humble sock is often overlooked, but it can work as a style accessory in its own right. Sparkly socks set off mini-skirts and shorts to perfection and stripy knee-high socks are a light-hearted nod to school-fashion. If you’d rather something a bit less obvious, look for a pair with lacing around the top.
