When it comes to the dark, grey days of winter, it seems as though our fashion choices reflect the weather. People tend to go for darker colours, bulky sweaters and anything that will hide them away from the harsh winter winds. Many of us then just count down the days until we can bring our spring wardrobe back out. However, winter style doesn’t have to be boring – and here are five reasons why!
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know I went to a Vintage Worth the Weight clothing kilo sale in Newcastle back in May. If you want to revamp your winter wardrobe without spending a fortune or wearing the same clothes as everyone else, then this is the kind of vibe you need.
Vintage clothing is fantastic because it’s all the rage and you’re not likely to see someone wearing the same dress as you at the office Christmas party. Plus, you can have so much fun with different patterns, colours (more on that in a bit), accessories and everything else. Don’t want a boring winter wardrobe? Go vintage.
Because the days are so grey, it seems like second nature to pull out the dark clothing colours during winter. Why do we reserve the bright colours for summer? I think the best way to brighten up your winter outfits is by adding plenty of colour and not hiding in the shadows.
Love Moschino is the kind of brand you want to be looking at for inspiration when it comes to bright colours and quirky prints. Bright floral print or dazzling leopard print in the middle of winter? Yes, please!
Winter is the ultimate time to get out all those glittery and sequin outfits. After all, it’s party season! Nothing says festive more than a dress that could also double up as a glitterball. If you’re frightened of embracing too much sparkle, look for jumpers or cardigans that have a little bit of glitter on them. That way you don’t have to go full-on disco ball but can still add some sparkle to your life.
Layering outfits, when done properly, is actually so much fun. You don’t need a whole wardrobe of new winter clothes if you know how to layer correctly. You can play around with different colours, textures and even patterns if you’re feeling brave. Yes, you really can mix and match patterns if you do it the right way. Layering gives a whole new element to each outfit, without the need for an entirely new wardrobe.
Finally, my top tip for sprucing up your winter style is to accessorise. It’s winter, so of course you get to play around with scarves, gloves hats and jackets. However, you can also have a little fun with shoes (or boots), handbags and jewellery. You can transform a winter outfit from drab to fab with just a few cleverly placed accessories. Plus, as already mentioned, this is the perfect season to play around with some sparkle and bright colours. Go wild.
No longer will we stand for a dreary winter style. The next time you find yourself pulling out the same jeans and dark jumper combo, considering playing around with your outfit a little bit – even if it’s just by adding an accessory or two.
